Antique oil painting on canvas with contemporary gilded and carved wooden frame depicting "The Rest of Diana". France 19th century.
Description: Antique oil painting on canvas depicting "The Rest of Diana" with a gilded and carved wooden frame contemporary to it.
The scene depicts the goddess of the hunt who, having put away her bow and quiver, is ready to enjoy the pleasures of a relaxing bath in the company of her nymph. The two young women are at the edge of a grove near the banks of a stream.
They are hidden by tall, lush shrubs and the goddess sits naked on a precious blue silk fabric.
The sweetness of the colors and the softness of the skin of the two young women show the importance of the influence of Italian art on the painter's training. In reality, the mythological inspiration only served to justify an image that would otherwise have appeared too sensual.
The subject is secondary to the true purpose of the painting; here we want to celebrate the charm of the female nude, in a mixture of glamour and eroticism.
