Oval still life with flowers, 19th century
19th century
Still life with flowers
Oil on oval canvas, 90 x 105 cm
With frame, 147 x 165 cm
The work belongs to the 19th century and echoes the compositions already used in previous centuries, starting from the seventeenth century and then continued in the eighteenth century, both by French and Flemish artists and by Italian painters who learned a lot from the foreigners who came to the peninsula for study or work. The maintenance and return of this graceful taste with bright and varied colors, as well as the predilection for this pictorial genre, was reasserted in the nineteenth century, starting from France and then touching other European countries, including northern Italy, closely linked culturally and artistically to the French. The subject retraces the motifs used in the past but through more vivid and luminous colors and without creating too intense light contrasts, but rather uniformly radiating the various elements with warm tones; furthermore, the outlines are defined, the volumes more compact and less nuanced than the works of equal subject of the past. Among the painters of northern Italy who ventured into this pictorial genre, Francesco Bosso, an artist from Vercelli, stood out in particular, whose favorite subjects were flowers and still lifes, which he created with elegance and mastery. The oval shape of the canvas is another typical feature in the still lifes of this period that is reflected in our canvas, as well as the use of bright colors and the airy landscape glimpse, where a sky veiled by luminous clouds is framed between the columns of a portico or garden. The gilded and shaped container channels the floral triumph above, which expands voluminously, touching the curtain in the upper part of the oval; the bright colors of the petals, shiny and polished, stand out against the celestial background as well as on the brown curtain and show the floridity of the roses and tulips of different shapes and colors.
