19th century Sketch of the Arch of Titus Oil on canvas, 60 x 42 cm In the painting under examination, to be dated to the 19th century, a detail of the Arch of Titus is depicted. Located on the slopes of the Palatine hill, where the clivus begins its ascent towards the hill, the arch of Titus was built at the behest of Domitian, the last emperor of the Flavian dynasty, in 81 AD in honor of his father Vespasiano and his brother Tito : built in memory of the victory in the great Jewish war (66 -73 AD) during which they devastated and sacked Jerusalem (70 AD). The arch, with a single archway and in Pentelic marble, is finely decorated. The pillars of the facades are decorated with pairs of colors
