Oil on cardboard depicting the Roman Forum. Artist: Northern European school. Period: Second half of the 19th century. Oil on cardboard depicting the Roman Forum with ruins and figures in carriage and on horseback. Northern European School. Rome was considered the central stage of the Grand Tour, as it represented at the same time a privileged access to the historical heritage of previous centuries and to the wonders of the contemporary Baroque era. In the first half of the nineteenth century, several Nordic painters left their cities to move to the Eternal City. It was a fashion that spread rapidly, giving life, in a few years, to a large colony of artists in love with Rome. Carton size
