August Riedel attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1820 onwards, where he proved to have an eye for color. He further developed his sense of color in Italy, where he moved in 1828, remaining there until his death. In his youth, he was part of the Lukasbund, and in adulthood became an academician of San Luca. He had reasonable success in Germany in the mid-19th century: his works are exhibited at the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
