Portrait of a gentleman – Late 19th century, strong expressiveness, to be restored
Portrait of a gentlemanItalian school, second half of the 19th century
Oil on canvas – 64 × 84 cm
Without frame, with original frame
Male portrait of great psychological intensity, executed in the second half of the 19th century. The subject, a gentleman with marked features and a penetrating gaze, is depicted with crossed arms and a reflective expression, against a dark but vibrant background, played on blue and brown tones. The work shows a good pictorial quality, especially in the rendering of the face and in the play of light on the face and clothes, with a sober but refined palette.
Condition: the work is in critical conservation conditions. Numerous tears and breaks are visible, signs of prolonged and neglected use. There are also approximate restoration interventions, probably amateur, with the application of patches on the back and tempera retouches on the surface, which partially compromise its reading. The canvas is without frame, mounted on an original frame. A painting of strong character, which retains its expressive force and the charm of nineteenth-century portraiture intact, ideal for collectors or restorers interested in a conscious recovery.
