Provenance: Private collection, Padua
Description: Elegant female portrait of the 19th-century Venetian school, depicting a lady in oriental dress, signed Natale Schiavoni, a painter known for his refined rendering of female faces and for the sensual but composed atmosphere of his portraits. The figure emerges from a dark background with delicate softness, emphasized by a warm light that caresses the skin and precious fabrics of the cloak and turban, of exotic-oriental taste, in line with the orientalist fashion widespread in European painting of the 19th century.
The absorbed gaze and the composed pose of the model recall the neoclassical aesthetics still alive in the early nineteenth century. The hands, rendered with remarkable anatomical care, suggest the technical ability of the author. Natale Schiavoni was one of the most appreciated Italian portrait painters of the nineteenth century. Born in Chioggia, he trained in Venice and was later active in Milan, Vienna and again in Venice, where he was appointed official painter of the Austrian court.
