Small Spanish painting on zinc – Saint Veronica with the Veil of Christ
Small oil painting executed on a zinc plate, depicting Saint Veronica with the veil bearing the imprinted image of Christ's face – iconography known as Vera Icon. The saint is depicted in half-length, with a sweet and collected expression, while she holds the shroud with both hands. She wears a red cloak over a dark green robe, and is surrounded by a luminous halo that emphasizes her sacredness. The zinc support, typical of the second half of the nineteenth century for small devotional objects, allows for an accurate and refined pictorial rendering. The face of Christ, partially visible due to an old cut of the plate, is rendered with depth and delicacy, in warm and well-shaded tones. The contemporary frame, in carved wood, is probably also of Spanish manufacture, decorated in the lower part with carved volutes and surmounted by a fan-shaped crest with popular neo-Gothic arch motifs.
