Carlo Grubacs (Venice, 1802 – after 1878) - St. Mark's Square, view from the pier
View of St. Mark's Square taken from the pier, with the two columns of the Piazzetta in the foreground, surmounted respectively by the statue of San Todaro and the Lion of Saint Mark. On the right, the Doge's Palace with its famous Gothic loggia; on the left, the Marciana Library and in the background the bell tower of San Marco, dominating the scene. In the background, between the arches, you can see the facade of the Basilica of San Marco. The square is animated by elegant figures and commoners who stroll or converse, giving vitality and realism to the scene.
The composition is characteristic of Grubacs' production, heir to the Venetian view painting tradition of Canaletto and Guardi, but updated to the nineteenth-century taste for topographical precision and attention to atmospheric light. The luminous palette, the meticulous architectural details and the rigorous perspective give the work a documentary as well as aesthetic value.
