Pair of views of Venice – Late 18th / early 19th century
Period: Late 18th / early 19th century
Origin: Venice
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: With frame 59 × 49 cm, canvas only 45 × 35 cm
Description: Elegant pair of Venetian views of foreign school, made between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The two canvases, of refined pictorial quality, sensitively capture the lagoon light and the poetic atmosphere of the Serenissima (Most Serene Republic of Venice).
One of the views depicts the Grand Canal with the majestic Rialto Bridge, animated by gondolas and sailboats sailing the water. The other canvas shows a panoramic view of the Basilica della Salute and the San Marco Basin, immersed in a golden light that emphasizes the magnificence of Venetian architecture.
Both works are distinguished by their chromatic finesse, delicate atmospheric rendering and perspective precision, elements that testify to the experienced hand of a painter trained in the Venetian environment, probably of foreign origin, influenced by European view painting taste. A pair of works of great elegance and charm, from an important Venetian collection.
