PAIR OF NIGHTSTANDS - VENETO - 18TH CENTURY
Pair of Venetian Nightstands from the 18th Century
Manufacturing and Constructive Characteristics
We present a rare pair of nightstands of Venetian manufacture, precisely datable to the 18th century, more specifically to the so-called Transitional period between Louis XV and Louis XVI.
The still-curved legs on the rectilinear body refer to the previous Baroque period.
These pieces of furniture represent a significant example of the Venetian cabinetmaking of the time, characterized by formal elegance and executive mastery.
Constructive and Stylistic Analysis:
Wood Essence: The supporting structure is made of solid fir wood, on which the walnut veneer arranged in a herringbone pattern highlights the compact grain and the notable hardness of the essence.
The visible surfaces, including the top, the drawer front, and the door panels, are finely veneered with carefully selected walnut and cherry root panels, arranged to create refined grain patterns ("book-matched" or "herringbone") that enhance their intrinsic beauty.
Finish and Patina: The surface has a shellac polishing which gives a deep color and a peculiar luster.
Upper Top: Perimeter edge with a beak-shaped profile.
Drawer: A single drawer in the upper part.
The handle is characterized by an original brass knob.
Lower Compartment: A hinged door, with veneer coordinated with the drawer, hides a functional internal compartment.
Legs: The four curved legs with accentuated "cabriole" curvature are typical of the Rococo and Venetian Baroque repertoire.
Conditions: Excellent conservative conditions for their age, restored and polished with shellac.
