This particular bench, made of carved wood in the 20th century, is an artifact from the city of Brienz in Switzerland. This type of artifact is called "Black Forest", after the area located in southwestern Germany in the state of Baden-Württemberg. At the end of the 19th century, wooden sculptures with subjects that recalled the wildlife and flora of the Black Forest woods, made by the skilled carvers of Brienz, had become very popular and appreciated and became a sign of wealth and luxury. Some Black Forest objects are kept in royal collections or in the homes of great collectors. Quickly, the charm of these wooden sculptures spread to America, where they received a strong demand.
This bench consists of a seat with armrests and backrest carved in the shape of intertwined tree trunks and branches, phytomorphic elements and in the center of the backrest the figure of a brown bear that with its front paws grasps two branches. Two large bears in an upright position with their front paws support the seat, turning their snouts forward.
The bench is very decorative and suitable for modern or rustic, mountain or country environments, or to be placed on terraces and gardens that overlook the green. It can also be designed for a tavern, a hallway or a porch. It preserves and testifies to the charm that the enchanting environment of the Black Forest exerts on man, already appreciated in ancient times.
