Bombé commode lacquered and gilded, Venetian area, 18th century
Important bombé commode in fir wood, richly shaped, lacquered and gilded, likely from the Venetian area and datable to the 18th century. The piece of furniture has a curved front with three drawers and similarly shaped sides, with a fluid and ornamental line. The decoration is one of the most fascinating elements of the piece: large carved and gilded bow motifs descend in the upper part, while an elaborate frieze with stylized plant elements, also gilded, runs in the lower band. The whole gives a scenographic effect of considerable impact, typical of the most imaginative and theatrical Venetian production of the eighteenth century. The lacquering, in light tones tending to green-grey, features historical restorations and repairs; the gilding largely preserves its original integrity, with small interventions over time. Some antique modifications affect the structure, including the probable replacement of the legs, however carried out with stylistic consistency. The top is in rosy breccia marble, harmonious with the whole, but most likely added later. Overall, the commode maintains a rich character, an important scenic presence and a solid structure.
