Neoclassical chest of drawers, finely inlaid, Genoa, late 18th century Dimensions H 90.5 x W 126 x D 58 cm Private negotiation Item accompanied by a certificate of authenticity This refined neoclassical chest of drawers was made around the end of the 18th century in Genoa. The piece of furniture has two large drawers and a smaller top drawer. There is no fixed crosspiece between the drawers, as it is integrated into the front of the drawer and slides with it. Of great executive level, the interiors of the drawers are all in solid walnut, characteristic of fine cabinetmaking. The chest of drawers is entirely inlaid with the use of wood species such as rosewood, bois de rose and boxwood. The inlaid surfaces have also been expertly pyrograph and burnished and are in excellent condition. This very refined technique allows to create a greater definition of the ornaments and also give three-dimensionality and chiaroscuro to the designs. On a dark background, the elegant inlays create neoclassical designs inspired by the taste of the time and the famous furniture of the Lombard cabinetmaker Giuseppe Maggiolini from Parabiago, who brought the technique of inlay applied to neoclassical furniture to the highest levels. On the front of the two large drawers and on the sides, in the center of a reserve with a geometric motif, stands a large classic vase from which rich and complex volutes and racemes depart, foliated motifs that extend gracefully across the entire surface. Corresponding to the upper drawer, both frontally and laterally, runs a band with inlays with a phytomorphic motif similar to that of the central decoration. The structure is defined by four projecting uprights connected to each other by crosspieces. This play of different planes and levels, which gives great value to the cabinet, produces a perspective and movement effect of great impact. The uprights are also inlaid with foliage and floral decorations. Of great value, the four truncated pyramid legs are inlaid on three sides. The gray marble top is contemporary. The handles and lock escutcheons, also original, are in finely chiseled gilt bronze. This chest of drawers therefore has a very elegant line and a particularly refined workmanship. It is in excellent condition, ready to be placed in any room of your home: suitable for a study or a living room, it is also pleasant in a bedroom or in the entrance hall, combined with antique furniture and even more so in modern contexts.
