Pair of Lombard demilune commodes
Pair of demilune commodes, Italian manufacture, Lombardy, late 18th century.
Walnut, rosewood, maple and fruit woods, marble top.
cm. 94 x 127 x 60
The pair of commodes, made of fine woods, represents a refined example of Lombard manufacture from the late 18th century. The particular curved shape gives volume to the furniture, while the ochre marble top, with its gray and scarlet veins, creates a contrast with the warm tones of the walnut wood. In the center, delicate inlays depict cups filled with acanthus leaves and geometric motifs; on the two openable side drawers there are decorative strings of plant motifs, culminating in birds with hooked beaks, perhaps eagles. The legs are pyramidal in shape.
