Walnut drop-front chest of drawers, Veneto, second half of the 17th century
Imposing walnut drop-front chest of drawers, also known as a Canteran-bureau, made in the Veneto area in the second half of the 17th century. It is a piece of furniture of great elegance and solidity, made of walnut wood with refined inlaid inserts with floral motifs, obtained through micro-excavations filled with light stucco, imitating the rarer and more precious ivory inlay. The upper part houses a drop-front concealing an internal compartment with eight small drawers, finely inlaid, flanked by two movable side panels. On the outside, the front is divided into four horizontal bands, apparently corresponding to four drawers, but the first band is actually an opening writing surface, which acts as a drop-front and conceals the internal writing desk. The three lower drawers can actually be opened and are very capacious. The original locks and coeval brass knobs, well preserved and perfectly integrated into the decoration, complete the piece of furniture. The structure and proportions make this piece of furniture suitable for a historical environment or a high-profile collection. It was restored a few years ago and is in excellent condition, with minimal cracks, slight movements of the wood and small signs of wear, fully compatible with the era. On request, a final treatment with natural wax can be carried out before shipment.
