PANC166 - Walnut chest, with lion's paw feet, 16th century, dimensions cm L 155 x H 57 x D 60
PANC166 - Elegant and impressive antique carved chest, in dark solid walnut wood, finely handcrafted.
The front panel is richly carved with phytomorphic and floral decorations, volute motifs, and in the center a cartouche or oval shield,
likely destined for a heraldic coat of arms.
The corners are decorated with sculpted figures (probably caryatids) that confer an allegorical and majestic tone.
The base is decorated with a frieze of gadroons or acanthus leaves, typical of Renaissance decoration.
The feet are carved in a lion's paw style, robust and consistent with the importance of the furniture.
This type of chest was used to contain linen, trousseaus, or valuables and was often placed in reception rooms or bridal chambers. It could also serve as a seat.
