Refined Louis XV style bureau plat desk, made during the Napoleon III period, an expression of the eclectic taste and historicist revival typical of the French Second Empire.
Made entirely of black lacquered wood with gilded and painted “a Chinoiserie” decorations depicting oriental landscapes with figures, architectures, trees and birds. Multiple decorations applied in mercury-gilded bronze, including corner mounts with rocaille motifs and finely chiseled sabots (feet) in the shape of acanthus leaves. Shaped top with gilded bronze frame, covered in carmine red leather and two side drawers.
