Louis Philippe Desk
Article Description
Louis Philippe walnut desk. Supported by two elegantly curved legs at the front and straight legs ending in a plinth at the back, it features a wide writing surface with rounded corners, equipped with a sort of railing, shaped and enriched by a small rear shelf. The band supporting the top, with a decoration obtained through vertical graining, has two small drawers on the sides, equipped with knobs, while a shelf unites the legs of the furniture in the lower part, leaving free maneuvering space for the person sitting there. This piece of furniture, of great elegance, accentuated by the sinuosity of the legs, and the attention to detail, actually reveals a probable other use in the past, since the lack of a further drawer in the central part is inexplicable except with the supposition of the replacement of the top itself, in an ancient restoration, where there could actually have been the classic hole for placing the basin for daily ablutions. Probably, therefore, the current desk was a toilet in the past. The top is however contemporary with the furniture and was executed with great skill.
