ROLLTOP DESK - GENOA - LOUIS XVI
Exceptional Genoese Cylinder Secretaire, Late Eighteenth Century
Type of Furniture: Cylinder (or rolltop) desk, support furniture.
Period: Late Eighteenth Century (Neoclassical period, Italian Louis XVI style).
Geographic Area: Genoese Manufacture.
Wood Type and Veneering: The furniture is entirely veneered in walnut burl with a particularly rich and flamed grain that creates a magnificent "open-book" or symmetrical effect on the drawer fronts and the cylinder. The veneering is a distinctive feature of luxury cabinetmaking of the period.
Inlays and Fillets: The structure is magnificently framed by thin and precise thread inlays in light boxwood. Key elements include:
A band decorated with an elegant Greek key or spindle motif, a classic of Neoclassicism.
Threads framing the veneering panels, enhancing the grain patterns.
On the sides, there are frames that follow the rounded shape of the cylinder, with a central lozenge or "partridge eye" motif.
Structure and Functionality: The furniture is presented as a two-body chest-desk with:
Lower body: Composed of two large rectangular drawers, embellished by the wood grain.
Upper body (Desk): Characterized by a refined cylinder/rolltop that, once slid, reveals an internal desk complete with:
A pull-out writing surface.
Small drawers and open compartments for storing correspondence and stationery.
Legs: Resting on elegant truncated conical (spindle) legs, another typical element of the Louis XVI/Neoclassical style, with a slight taper downwards. They are decorated with an alternation of light and dark woods that create a fluted or vertical banded pattern.
Hardware: The hardware is in chased bronze and features:
Elegant circular rosette handles on the drawers.
Bronze keyhole escutcheons, which contribute to the aesthetic richness.
State of Preservation: Excellent state of preservation, with shellac polishing that enhances the depth of the grain.
