This elegant prie-dieu was made in Turin in the mid-18th century. Entirely veneered and inlaid with walnut and boxwood, it features very refined decorations of spirals and phytomorphic elements. On the front, an inlay with a floral still life of great pictorial effect completes the decoration. The chromatic contrasts that the different colors of the wood species create are precious, thanks also to the cabinetmaker's skillful ability to exploit the grain of the wood in order to create plays of color and decorative effects. The frames, reserves and ornaments that the inlays create are an example of this, in addition to the finish of the rounded edges with a geometric pattern effect.
The prie-dieu has a sober and slightly moved shape that respects the dictates of Baroque furniture commissioned by nobles and wealthy bourgeois for their private homes. The upper quadrangular top is slightly shaped on the front. On the front, the piece of furniture, slightly concave, has a small drawer and a compartment concealed by a door. The top on which to rest the knees can be opened from above thanks to a drop-leaf door. The feet are shaped and slightly moved.
Still usable as a prie-dieu, it can also be considered as a bedside table or piece of furniture for storing small private objects, which can be placed in an intimate environment such as a study or a bedroom.
