GILT WOODEN MIRROR - PIMONTE - 18TH CENTURY
Antique Piedmontese Louis XVI Mirror
Description:
Splendid antique mirror, dating back to the 18th century (Louis XVI period, 1774-1793). It is a magnificent example of Piedmontese cabinet making, characterized by a sober but richly detailed elegance, in transition between the Rococo and Neoclassicism.
Style: Louis XVI (Neoclassical) with local Piedmontese influences. The style is characterized by the pursuit of linearity and symmetry, in contrast to the curved lines of the Rococo, while maintaining a decorative richness typical of the Piedmont area.
Materials:
Wood: Finely carved, gilded with gold leaf.
Mirror: Original, with beveled reserves and the typical oxidation and patina of the mercury mirror.
Manufacture: Piedmontese. The Piedmontese mirrors of this period are known for the high quality of the carving and the generous use of gilding.
Details and Distinctive Features
Scenic Crest (Upper Part): Richly carved and pierced with volute motifs, cartouches, plant and floral elements (such as central roses or daisies), an expression of a still lively taste, typical of the northern Italian area.
Frame: The main frame is squared, in line with the Louis XVI canons, but it is enriched by a second internal frame and by lateral and lower glass reserves with small floral applications, very decorative.
Side and Base Elements: The sides are decorated with handles or sculptural volutes and rest on carved feet in the shape of a curl/volute, which allow its use as a dressing table, chest of drawers or mantelpiece mirror, while it can also be hung on the wall.
Conditions: Excellent general condition. The normal and desirable signs of aging are visible, such as crackling and slight lacks in the gilding which confirm its age and do not compromise its aesthetic value.
Dimensions: height 158 cm, width 91 cm.
