Large Genoese lacquered mirror. Genoa, mid-18th century
Important large-format Ligurian mirror, made in Genoa around the mid-eighteenth century. The frame, finely carved in sculpted and lacquered wood, is distinguished by the elaborate rococo movement, with volutes, counter-curves and curl motifs that give lightness and dynamism to the whole. The surface retains the original lacquering, with a cream-white background and light blue finishes, enriched by polychrome floral ornaments in relief - including graceful sculpted roses - arranged at the points of greatest compositional relief. The state of conservation is good, with signs of wear consistent with the period and some slight retouching in the lacquer. Some regluing, traces of inactive woodworm, and replacement of both the mirror and the back are noted, carried out in recent times. The generous dimensions (approximately 100 cm wide, 140 cm high) indicate a probable original destination in a noble setting, such as a reception room or boudoir, contributing to making this mirror a rare example of eighteenth-century Ligurian decoration in rocaille style, precious for its size, elegance and color scheme.
