Rococo mirror
Carved and gilded wood and mirror, cm 70 x 58
A mid-18th century Venetian-made mirror that follows the Rococo taste that became established in the lagoon during this period, both in the field of furniture and more generally in Venetian art. The undulating shape of the frame that surrounds the mirror is reflected in the fan-shaped mirror models then made in Venice; the same decoration of the frame uses elements and shapes typical of the era: volutes, vegetal elements, in particular in the flowers of the crest, and animals, such as the specular sea dragons on the outermost concave edges, or the shell on the bottom, another recurring element in Venetian decorations. The opulence of the ornaments carved in wood and gilded, however, manages not to weigh down the structure of the mirror which is graceful, delicate and light as a whole, following the canons of the Rococo style.
