"Sorcière" mirror in gilded wood, 19th century Rare oval-shaped convex mirror, known as a "sorcière", dating back to the second half of the 19th century. The frame is finely crafted in carved and gilded wood, enriched by an elegant pearl decoration along the inner edge and a series of fluted motifs on the outer band. The imposing cimasa in pastiglia presents rocaille scrolls, flowers, and acanthus leaves, in the late Louis XVI style, with ornamental elements typical of the French taste of the late nineteenth century. The convex mirror, originally used to broaden the perspective and reflect light, gives the object a theatrical and decorative charm. In good general condition, with slight signs of age on the gilding. The sorciere is an object rich in charm and symbolism, often present in ancient paintings, especially between the 15th and 17th centuries. Perhaps the most famous painting where a convex mirror is seen is by Jan van Eyck - "The Arnolfini Portrait" (1434), in the center of the back wall of the painting there is a small convex mirror that reflects the entire scene, including the painter himself. It symbolizes the divine presence, the truth, and also the testimony of the scene depicted. Function and symbolism: It amplified the light and allowed a broad view of the space (used in bourgeois homes). Symbol of omniscient presence, vanitas (transience of life), or even magical protection in popular beliefs. In France, it earns the name miroir de sorcière (witch's mirror), precisely because of this aura of mystery and power.
