Painted and polychrome decorated wooden chest, Tuscany, 15th century
Description
Pine wood chest dating back to the 15th century, of Tuscan origin; a typical example of a Renaissance wedding chest, used both as a container for the wedding trousseau and as an element of domestic prestige. It has a polychrome tempera decoration. The front is divided into three sections: lateral rectangular panels framed, with figurative scenes and landscapes that reveal urban settings and perhaps narrative episodes related to the wedding or family history; central medallion with heraldic coat of arms, surmounted by three crowns or stylized figures, indicative of the commissioning family and its social position. Handles on the sides and central lock are coeval.
