MAHOGANY FEATHER SECRETARY - FRANCE - 19TH CENTURY
Magnificent Empire Period Mahogany and Gilt Bronze Abattant Secretary (Early 19th Century)
This exceptional secretaire à abattant (drop-front secretary) perfectly embodies the austere splendor and monumental elegance of the French Empire Style, which flourished under the reign of Napoleon I (c. 1800-1815).
Materials and Construction
Wood: The cabinet is entirely veneered in flamed mahogany (Acajou flammé), an exotic and luxurious wood, whose vibrant grain is skillfully used to create a "butterfly" or symmetrical effect on the main front panel. The shellac finish enhances the depth of color and shine of the wood.
Marble Top: The top is surmounted by an elegant light marble top with light veining, which adds a touch of classic refinement and protects the piece.
Columnar Stiles: The structure is characterized by imposing full column side stiles, which give the piece a solid architecture. These rest on turned feet with a circular plinth.
Wealth of Gilt Bronzes (Ormolu)
The fire-gilt bronze (Ormolu) details are a distinctive and high-quality feature of the Empire era:
Capitals and Bases: The columns are adorned with rich bronze capitals and bases, finely chiseled and gilded. The decoration features floral and geometric motifs, typical of the neoclassical and Empire repertoire.
Handles and Escutcheons: The three lower drawers are fitted with ring handles held by a circular plaque decorated with a lion's head (a classic Roman motif and symbol of strength, much loved in the Empire). The keyhole covers also feature elegant gilt bronze finishes.
Upper Frieze: Under the marble, a small central gilt bronze frieze serves as an additional decorative and closing element.
Interior (The Abattant)
The central element is the abattant (the drop-front), which opens to reveal a sophisticated and functional interior:
Writing Desk: The lowered drop-front forms a comfortable work surface, covered in dark leather, ideal for writing.
Mirror Niche: The interior is dominated by a central mirrored niche, flanked by further columns, which amplify space and light.
Compartments and Drawers: It has numerous open compartments, small drawers and secret compartments, perfect for organizing documents, pens and valuables.
