DescriptionCharles II Sterling Silver Tankard, Silversmith AL, London, 1676 A rare antique English silver tankard with a flat lid and a distinctive kidney-shaped thumbpiece. The S-shaped handle terminates in a shield. The shape of this tankard first appeared around 1640 and it is unusual to find one dating from this turbulent and ancient period. Very charming, with hand-hammered silver, the tankard shows great character; an interesting detail is the pointed front of the lid. A shield is engraved on the front. Sterling silver marked with 4 hallmarks: Manufacturer's logo: AL unidentified Lion passant: hallmark of the alloy. Guarantee check of the 925/1000 sterling title Leopard's head with crown: city of London Date letter year: 1676 Dimensions Dimensions: HxWxD 17.5cm x 21cm x 14.5cm Weight 934gr Provenance Private collection Condition Slight signs of wear of time and superficial scratches. The 4 hallmarks are present on the lid and on the side of the body.
