These two chiseled and gilded bronze candlesticks were made in the early 19th century and are inspired by the neoclassical taste that developed in France after 1750 (Louis XVI era), involving all the decorative arts. Three female figures, identifiable as vestals and placed back-to-back, form the stem of the candlestick. The stepped circular base, with three feet, has a refined chasing with classical-style plant elements. Above the heads of the three women is a circular section element that holds the candle, decorated with phytomorphic elements. This model is inspired by the works of Robert-Joseph Auguste (1723-1805) who, together with Jacques Roettiers (1707-1784) developed neoclassicism in goldsmithing. These candlesticks are comparable to a pair of candlesticks made in 1775 by Auguste for King Gustav III of Sweden, and now preserved at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
The executive refinement and the luminosity of the gilded bronze give the objects easy adaptability, perfect for adorning your furniture or a fireplace and embellishing your set table.
