"Arte Povera" lacquered wooden tray. Turin, 18th century.
"Arte Povera" lacquered wooden tray. Turin, 18th century.
F 51 x 51 cm.
A rare and fascinating polychrome wooden decorative plate, a remarkable example of the 18th-century Piedmontese "arte povera" or poor lacquer tradition, a decorative technique that was particularly widespread in Piedmont as an economical alternative to expensive oriental lacquers.
- The plate features a complex decorative composition organized on multiple concentric registers. At the center, within a roundel framed by a golden border, is depicted a bucolic landscape with lush trees and a path. In the middle band on a vermilion red background, four large polylobed shaped cartouches enclose views of fantastic architectures and architectural capriccios of architectural whims on a turquoise background. Monumental bridges with statues and obelisks stand out among these, always enriched by naturalistic elements.
The work is made with the technique of "poor lacquer" or "arte povera", a process that involved the application of hand-colored engraved prints on the wooden support and then protected by layers of transparent varnish to imitate the effect of oriental lacquers. The technique was particularly widespread in Turin and in the Piedmontese centers during the 18th century.
