Pair of elegant neoclassical columns in alabaster and gilded wood, early 19th century
Rare and refined pair of decorative columns in neoclassical style, made in the first quarter of the 19th century, probably in the Austro-Venetian area. The work presents a composite structure of great formal balance: the shaft, entirely carved in alabaster with light vertical grooves, rests on a square base in ebonized wood (10 x 10 cm), with a molded and gold leaf-gilded base. The capital recalls the Corinthian model, with rich carved volutes and floral details, also gilded in gold leaf. Particularly curious and decorative is the presence, in the center of the capital, of a small projecting zoomorphic element, vaguely similar to a stylized eagle's head, which enriches the ornamental layout. The top of each column is closed by a double spherical element: a larger alabaster sphere surmounted by a smaller one in gilded wood, with a decorative function and probably conceived as an end part. The whole suggests an original use as lateral furnishing elements, perhaps intended to flank a mantel clock or used as supports for small lamps or decorative urns. Height 35 cm. Base 10 x 10 cm. Objects of refined and effective taste, in excellent condition with a natural patina of time. Ideal for classic contexts or for contrasting inserts in contemporary environments.
