Malayer Persian carpet – Early 20th century
Hand-knotted Persian carpet, attributable to the Malayer manufacture, an area of western Iran known for the production of carpets of great elegance and decorative richness. The work can be dated to the first decades of the twentieth century (circa 1920–1930). The design is centered on a burnished rhombus medallion with pendants and surrounded by an ivory field richly decorated with stylized floral motifs, rosettes, and polychrome trails. The outer field, with a dark background and intensely decorated, features a dense modular flowering with small geometric and floral motifs, with refined chromatic nuances (abrash) that vary from green to blue and red. The main border, of intense red color, is framed by minor borders with floral motifs on a light background. The carpet is made of wool on cotton warp and weft, with an asymmetrical knot (Persian knot). The tones are still clearly legible, with a beautiful harmony between the natural colors – reds, blues, ochres, greens and pinks. It shows some signs of wear in the central area, consistent with age and use, and a restoration seam along one edge, made in a traditional way. Overall, the work is preserved in good structural condition and is still fully enjoyable.
