The Beatles: a signed table top (1960) - unique!
A unique piece of Beatles memorabilia
A fold-up table top into which the Beatles have scratched their names. The special interest is that it shows the signatures of John Lennon (with a little caricature of himself), Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe (with the Beatles only until 1960) and Ringo Starr (who only joined the band in 1962). Most likely the scratchings were made in October 1960 when the Beatles first met Ringo Starr who was also performing in Hamburg as member of The Hurricanes (on 15 October 1960 they recorded Gershwin's Summertime together). The table seems the only physical record of Starr's early involvement with the group.
There are also a few other names scratched in the table which can't be identified at the moment - 'Pauline', 'James' and 'Klogmann' (= Klaus Voormann?).
NB! The table is now painted off-white, but underneath still shows the black in which the former owner, Astrid Kirchherr, the Beatles' first photographer and Stuart Sutcliffe's fiance, had painted her walls and furniture.
