RENAISSANCE POLYCHROME STUCCO MID-SIXTEENTH CENTURY
Beautiful Renaissance polychrome stucco, with original painting, applied on a wooden board. The stucco depicts the Deposition of Christ, clearly visible in the center, with the dying Christ lying on his mother Mary's legs. Beside them, to the right, is the figure of Pontius Pilate, dressed in typical Roman centurion clothing, while to the left is a kneeling woman, probably Mary Magdalene. Above, a beam of light descends towards Mary and the Son, a symbol of God; around it are depicted angels flying and crying. In the lower part, inside a "tabula ansata", there is a Latin inscription relating to the verse from the Old Testament taken from Isaiah 53:5, which reads: "he was pierced for our iniquities, he was crushed for our misdeeds". This stucco, of considerable value and antiquity, was generally placed in niches at crossroads or in small chapels of country houses. Tuscan-Sienese manufacture typical of the mid-sixteenth century.
