German wrought iron padlock with original key – 18th century
Rare German wrought iron padlock, datable to the 18th century, characterized by a cylindrical case with four deep decorative grooves. The object measures 5.5 cm wide by 8 cm high (10 cm with the key inserted). The original, entirely coeval key has a spiral bolt with a left-hand thread that allows the internal locking mechanism to be operated. The opening system is based on a helical thrust spring and an ingenious threaded device which, by rotating, triggers the mechanism. The oval handle has a beautiful openwork ornamental volute. Hand-forged artifact, probably of German origin or from the central-European Alpine area. Antique patina, beautiful surface oxidation, fully functional.
