Blown glass puppy – Murano (?), 19th century
Curious zoomorphic blown glass container, modeled in the shape of a puppy, probably of Murano production destined for export to the Austro-German area (Bavaria, Austria). Datable to the mid/second half of the 19th century.
The body has vertical grooves, four hot-applied legs, a stylized head with raised ears and a pipe-shaped tail, functional for pouring liqueurs or distillates (Schnapps). This type of object is known in the Germanic area as “Schnapshund” or “Spaßhund” (“schnapps dog” or “joke dog”), widespread as a table curiosity and object of conversation.
Dimensions: height 13 cm, length 16 cm, depth 7.5 cm.
Condition: signs of use and small wear consistent with age, overall well preserved.
