The painting, rich in pathos and strong spirituality, depicts a moment from the Passion: it is the "Christ at the Column", a recurring iconographic subject in Christian art, which represents Jesus tied during the flagellation, an episode narrated in the Gospels.
The body of Christ, still tied inside a prison cell, is portrayed here in full figure and is modeled by means of a strong chiaroscuro: this is a fine example of late Renaissance painting from Northern Italy in the Lombard area, reminiscent of 16th-century models and presumably based on a model by Giampietrino.
A painting similar to ours, of larger dimensions, is kept in the Church of S. Alessandro in Milan (https://catalogo.beniculturali.it/detail/HistoricOrArtisticProperty/0300014556).
The "Christ at the Column" is an image full of religious meaning, which evokes physical and spiritual suffering. We see him with an expression of quiet suffering; his acceptance of fate is an example of mercy and divine love, a central message in Christian theology.
Also interesting is the load of symbolism it contains: the column itself represents not only the instrument of punishment, but is also a symbol of stability and moral strength, which for the faithful represents Christ's unwavering faith.
Also the window on the left, which plays a crucial role in illuminating the scene and in underlining the approach of the divine call, is a symbol of openness to grace and to the action of Christ.
Finally, there is the red cloth that was used to wrap Christ, a symbol of his passion and shed blood, alluding to Christ's physical and spiritual suffering during his Passion.
Although the iconography of 'Christ at the Column' rarely sees the presence of other characters, in our case that of the Virgin Mary is interesting, although discreet; not at his side but behind bars, spiritually present in the suffering of her son, and which highlights the strong bond between mother and son, even during the most painful trial.
