This panel after a prototype by Hugo van der Goes (ca. 1440-1482), a fragment of which has been preserved in Christ Church Oxford. The work was excedingly popular in Flanders during the 16th century and many skilled painters have prosuced copies of it. Some show a gold ground, others a landscape, again others (like ours) a plain background with the cross and a ladder leaning against it. The composition of our panel is the most closely related to the copy in the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art in Conneticut.
