Icon on fir wood panel with gold background, 21 × 25 cm. Extraordinary gold-ground panel depicting a Madonna and Child, work of the Veneto-Cretan school from the late 16th century, executed with pictorial refinement and marked formal elegance. The work stands out for its remarkable compositional balance, attention to detail, and chromatic richness, which alternates warm and deep tones – purplish reds, intense greens, gold – with technical skill and spiritual strength. The face of the Virgin, sweet and absorbed, bends with tenderness towards the Child, in a gesture of profound humanity and sacredness, according to the Byzantine model of the "Eleousa" (the Madonna of tenderness), reworked by Veneto-Cretan painting in a more luminous and plastic key. The drapery, sculpted by fluid lines and sharp chiaroscuro, gives volume and dynamism to the figure, without renouncing the hieratic balance of the iconic tradition. The panel is made of fir wood, visibly old, slightly curved (in the absence of rear supports), and shows a bright and authentic gold background, emerged from a small cleaning test that confirms the quality of the original preparation. On the back, there are antique handwritten markings, likely referring to a collection inventory. Despite the trimming of about 1 cm at the top and bottom (probably done to fit it into a frame), the work retains a compact and powerful visual presence. There are some marginal color losses, concentrated on the right, and slight antique stucco fillings, absolutely compatible with the era and the delicacy of the support. An icon of great pictorial quality, appreciable both for its devotional intensity and for its historical-artistic value in the panorama of post-Byzantine schools. Worldwide shipping available.
