"Madonna della Seggiola" by RaphaelOil on canvas Early 19th century Canvas 45 x 45 cm, frame 60 x 60 cm Excellent condition The Madonna della Seggiola is a very famous oil painting on panel (diameter 71 cm) by Raphael Sanzio, datable to around 1513-1514 and kept in the Palatine Gallery of Palazzo Pitti in Florence. It has been in the Medici collections since the first half of the sixteenth century and, judging by the format of the panel, it was certainly created for a private setting. The work takes its name from the chair on which Mary is sitting with the Child in her arms. One of the characteristics of the painting is seeing both protagonists turning towards the viewer, but while Mary looks straight ahead, the Child seems to look towards a more distant point. Saint John the Baptist is present in the scene, on the right, emerging from the dark background and making a gesture of prayer to Mary. She bows her head towards her son, bringing their heads together and creating a situation of intimate family sweetness. Behind the formal beauty there is a very complex geometric compositional scheme, studied to be perfectly inserted in a circular support. The details are extremely well cared for, making it a work of great formal refinement. Its great visual richness makes the work "undoubtedly one of the greatest masterpieces of Renaissance art".
