Painting by Bartolomeo Neroni known as Riccio, Madonna with Child between Saint Ansano and Saint Catherine
Oil on panel. The work is accompanied by an expert appraisal by Professor Mauro Minardi, who attributes the painting to the production of Bartolomeo Neroni, known as Riccio, an artist active in Siena in the 16th century, through a documented comparison of the pictorial elements of this work with others by the same author. The painting proposes a subject that was widely disseminated in the Sienese artistic environment of the 16th century, namely a Madonna with Child and Saints. In this tondo, Mary is depicted in half-length while supporting the Child Jesus, standing in front of her on a support surface: the hands of the mother and son intertwine in a gesture of tenderness. At their sides, in the background, two figures of saints, which are among the most venerated in Siena: on the right Saint Catherine, recognizable by her black monastic habit with white veil and wimple and in her hand the traditional lily, symbol of purity; on the left appears a lesser-known saint, Sant' Ansano, a young knight who lived in the 3rd century in Siena, then a Roman colony, where he preached Christianity and received martyrdom. The young saint is depicted holding in one hand the staff of a banner and with the other a spherical object that, according to his iconography, should represent a heart. The work therefore falls within the devotional painting widely spread in the 16th century and to which Riccio and his studio dedicated great effort, given the extensive number of examples similar to this one that have survived and attributed to him, also thanks to fortunate documentation for some of them. The images of the painting are inscribed in an embossed frame in the same table and gilded. At the back the table is reinforced by parquet flooring. There are some color losses.
