The Resurrection of Christ, Follower of Tiziano Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore 1490 - Venice 1576)
The Resurrection of ChristFollower of Tiziano Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore 1490 - Venice 1576)
Venetian school of the late 16th/early 17th century
Oil on canvas (108 x 78 cm - Framed 129 x 99 cm)
This jewel of the Venetian school, a work executed between the 16th and 17th centuries by an author of Venetian area, illustrates the episode of the Resurrection of Christ: as reported in the Gospel of Matthew (Mt 28:1-7) the event is accompanied by an explosion of light and flashes, with the figure of Christ rising into heaven.
The face of Christ, serene and victorious, looks up to the Light and the Infinite, in contrast to his majestic figure, here constructed with the appearance of a classical sculpture, contrasted by an intensely luminous background.
The Risen one firmly holds the banner (white with a red cross) of the Resurrection, also known as the flag of Saint George, which iconographically represents His victory over death, while he raises his right hand in a blessing gesture. With his feet he crushes a snake and a skull, a sign of Christ's triumph over sin and death.
The painting falls within the Venetian school and presents clear reminiscences of the works of Tiziano Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore 1490 - Venice 1576), which allow us to attribute its execution to a follower of the master, due to the style and pictorial dictate.
The extraordinary luminosity that envelops in a skillful chiaroscuro is of clear Titianesque parentage: the composition is crossed by an intense glow that radiates the body of Christ, emphasizing a rather sober and very luminous chromatic range.
To better focus on the recognizability of the model, our composition can be compared with the Risen Christ by Titian now in the Uffizi Gallery, where we can find the same layout (https://www.uffizi.it/mostre-virtuali/pasqua-2019#39).
Condition: The canvas is in a good state of conservation considering the period; There is an old relining. Complete with gilded and lacquered frame.
