Attributed to Antonio Calza (Verona 1653 - 1725) "Battlefield" (Military maneuvers with knights before the clash) Oil on canvas, late 17th century Gilded frame sculpted with twisted patterns. Canvas size 130 x 220 cm, frame 148 x 238 cm Excellent state of preservation Artwork professionally cleaned and relined Written expertise by prof. Egidio Martini This splendid large canvas depicts a field scene with a large group of knights in the foreground preparing for battle. The panorama of military operations extends as far as the eye can see in the large clearing up to the long dark horizontal line of hills, which divides the area teeming with soldiers from the cloud-laden sky. The composition is truly spectacular, rich in descriptive details with a great variety of characters in movement. The considerable size of the canvas helps to make the painting of exceptional visual effect, with an incredible sense of space both frontal and lateral. The splendid chromatic range, where the very bright blue of the knights' velvet jackets stands out (an unparalleled prerogative of the Veronese Master), has remained unchanged and shines with lights and colors thanks to a perfect cleaning intervention. It is an exciting painting of great attraction, capable of furnishing a large living room in a prestigious way. It is presented in excellent condition, already professionally cleaned and relined. Due to the exceptional measurements of the canvas, the relining was carried out on an aluminum frame with low expansion textile support, following the most advanced technique to avoid wood twisting and canvas movement. Brief biographical notes about the Author: Antonio Calza (Verona, 1658 – Verona, 18 April 1725) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. Son of a jeweler named Giovanni, he was a pupil of the Bolognese painter Carlo Cignani, then moved to Rome to work under Jacques Courtois where he learned the lesson of the French master specializing in clashes of knights and battles. Returning from Rome he worked mainly in Bologna where he had started his career. He is known for his historical paintings and especially for paintings with battle scenes.
