ROSA DA TIVOLI – PAINTING ON CANVAS “PASTORAL SCENE WITH GOAT, SHEEP AND DOG” (Frankfurt, 1655 - Rome, 1706) Elegant and suggestive bucolic oil on canvas scene attributed to Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli, and his workshop. Rosa da Tivoli was a German painter active in Rome in the second half of the 17th century, famous for his compositions with animals and among the best-known interpreters of 17th-century European pastoral painting. The work depicts a pastoral group composed of a majestic goat with twisted horns, two sheep and a crouching sheepdog, immersed in a twilight landscape with warm tones. The brushstroke is fluid, soft but intense, with particular attention to the material rendering of the animals' coats. The warm and golden atmosphere refers to the Roman school and the naturalistic suggestions dear to Roos. The author's ability to evoke the fleece and the gazes of the animals is peculiar, so much so that the surrounding environment takes a back seat. The work is in patina and in its original canvas, fixed to the original wooden frame with interlocking joints and presented in a beautiful carved and gilded contemporary frame. On the back there is an old inventory number, a further indication of belonging to a historical collection. Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli, was one of the best animal painters active in Italy in the 17th century. Son of a painter, he is documented in Rome from 1677 where he decided to marry the daughter of Giacinto Brandi and convert to Catholicism. From 1683 he was a member of the Congregation of Virtuosi at the Pantheon and from 1684 he moved to Tivoli, hence the nickname. There is no doubt about the collecting fortune he enjoyed, so much so that his paintings were requested by the main art lovers in Europe. Due to the speed with which he painted, it is very difficult to keep count of his production. CM. 101X132 WITH CONTEMPORARY FRAME CM.84X115
