- In Greek mythology, Phaeton, son of the sun god Helios, asked his father to be allowed to drive the chariot of the Sun for one day to demonstrate his divine descent. Helios reluctantly agreed, but Phaeton, unable to control the fiery horses, rose too high, burning the sky, then too low, setting the earth on fire. To prevent the destruction of the world, Zeus struck him with a thunderbolt, causing him to plunge into the river Eridanus.
