Venetian painter of the 17th/18th centuryVenus and Love Oil on canvas (57 x 49 cm - Framed 71 x 61 cm) Complete details of the painting (click HERE) The painting captures attention with its intimate and sensual representation, with a seductive, semi-nude Venus at its center, with soft and sinuous forms, lying on a bed with draped white sheets, with an expression of calm mischief on her face. Beside her, Cupid extends his hands, in a gesture that suggests complicity and affection, while wanting to take back his arrow, an iconic symbol of love. The light, which seems to come from above, caresses the figures, enhancing the roundness of the bodies and creating a play of light and shadows that gives depth and realism to the scene, with the dark background that highlights the figures in the foreground, concentrating attention on the intimacy of the moment. The painting invites the viewer to contemplate the beauty of Venus, who embodies a prototype of exuberant beauty much appreciated at the time, and who, as the divinity of love and eros, embodies attraction, desire and passion. The "sensual bond" between Venus and Cupid therefore represents the contrast between earthly love and higher, more spiritual love, which can, however, become earthly and sensual through the arrows of love. The analysis of the painting allows us to place its execution in the northern Italian school, executed by a Venetian author active between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The subject recalls those preferred by the head of the school Pietro Liberi, interested in profane themes such as this, in which the evidently erotic purposes were often combined with stories of myth. The astute malice of the gaze of the very sensual Venus, depicted in profile, corresponds to the complicit expression of Cupid, disarmed by her.
