UNDER RESTORATION. The painting depicts the very young Duke Vittorio Amedeo II of Savoy with parade armor, a baton of command, and the collar of the Annunciation around his neck. In the background, a rich arrangement of red silk draperies. The painting, intended to decorate a public place or noble household, is clearly iconographically derived from Pierre Mignard's painting of the Duchino, which is located in Palazzo Madama in Turin. Mignard's work was a prototype and source of inspiration for numerous paintings. The work here under study is attributable to the circle of Laurent Dufour, belonging to a veritable dynasty of painters, spanning 3 generations, who contributed significantly to the movement to embellish and rebuild the churches of Savoy. The patriarch, Pierre Dufour, son of Denis Dufour, was born in Saint-Michel de Maurienne at the beginning of the 17th century, and in 1627 became a citizen of Annecy, a city he left in 1630 to escape the plague and settle in Saint-Michel. From his first marriage, he had 4 children, 3 of whom are known to have inherited their father's talent: Pierre le jeune, Laurent, and Gabriel who trained in their father's workshop in Saint-Michel de Maurienne. All left the valley to settle at the Duke's court in Turin, where they held various court positions, including that of portrait painters.
