Although his role as a knight is emphasized, his pose is regal, a three-quarter portrait, surmounted by a plumed helmet, while he wields the typical field marshal's baton, the quintessential ceremonial symbol of command, worn as part of the uniform by soldiers with the highest rank in the hierarchy. The pictorial quality of the painting is not alien to Spanish-inspired suggestions, understandable given that for most of the 16th and 17th centuries the Lombard area was governed by the Spanish government.
