Adam and Eve Flemish Master 17th Century Oil on canvas Antique gilded frame Canvas cm. 50 x 63 Frame cm. 61 x 72 Excellent condition This interesting Flemish canvas from the 17th century depicts the most fascinating and controversial episode described in the "Genesis" of the Old Testament. Adam and Eve, disobeying the Creator's order, eat the fruit of the Tree that leads to the knowledge of Good and Evil, a prerogative that belongs exclusively to God. The two Sinners will be expelled from the Garden of Eden, losing all the benefits of their status, including immortality. This disobedience will be considered the "Original Sin" and will reduce all human beings to being born sinners. Only the sacrifice of the Son of God will save our souls by following His Word. The work is characterized by an evident but composed eroticism. Under the tree of the forbidden fruit, naked Eve, with her graces well exposed, offers the apple with ostentatious malice to her companion. The serpent, who convinced the Woman to disobey God, observes satisfied among the branches. Below, half-hidden in the shadow, appears the horrible shape of Satan, who with half-human and half-animal features, attends the effusions of the two lovers. Adam seems bewitched by his companion and allows himself to be seduced by accepting her offer, incurring the wrath of God and the terrible consequences. The naked bodies of the two protagonists stand out decisively from the landscape background, diaphanous and feminine that of Eve, very virile with the accentuated male anatomy that of Adam.
