Ciro Ferri (Rome, 1634 – Rome, 1689) Attributable to Annunciation with God the Father (probable preparatory sketch) Oil on canvas 61 x 41 cm. - Framed 79 x 49 cm. Full details (click HERE) The work, certainly commissioned as an object of private devotion, shows the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, an evangelical episode here set on the two figures portrayed in the foreground, the Archangel Gabriel with wings spread, portrayed with a supernatural beauty, and the Virgin; we see her here portrayed absorbed in reading a book of prayers with her eyes humbly cast down in a sign of devotion, while a small cherub delivers her the white lilies, a symbol of purity and chastity. In the upper part of the composition, the austere image of God the Father, with the dove radiated with light, the emblem of the Holy Spirit, surrounded by a flock of angels fluttering among the clouds laden with intense glimmers and plays of light, in full Baroque style. The analysis of the stylistic and figurative characteristics of our painting shows its belonging to the Roman school of the 17th century, distinguished by its refined style, and capable of amalgamating the Baroque language, by definition lavish, with elements of classicist ancestry. In particular, observing its iconographic characteristics and drawing features, the approximation to the style of Ciro Ferri (Rome 1633 - 1689), one of the best pupils of Pietro da Cortona, who took up his drawing mastery and coloristic wisdom, embracing however a more classicizing and delicate style, seems fitting. The structure of the painting clearly reveals that we are facing a precious preparatory sketch, presumably a study for a fresco or for a larger altarpiece; this suggests that the final work was intended for the decoration of the bay of a church or a private chapel. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The painting is sold complete with a pleasant frame and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic sheet.
